Big companies neglecting to renew domainsMajor companies and organisations world-wide are increasingly failing to recognise the importance of timely renewal of their domain names, sometimes leading to significant interruptions to their ability to provide services on the Internet.
In one of the latest publicised cases, the Massachusetts Department of Education "forgot" to pay its renewal for "massed.net", a domain ending used by about 28,000 of the state's teachers for their email addresses. "We did in fact forget to pay the bill," said spokesman Jonathan Palumbo. The teachers and others using the domain were without email and other services under the domain for about a week while the problem was resolved and the small renewal fee paid.
A similar incident occurred at Verizon Communications (formerly Bell Atlantic) when it inadvertently allowed "bellatlantic.net" to expire this month. The company has around 150,000 customers with email addresses ending in bellatlantic.net, of which it estimated around 50,000 were affected by the temporary loss of their domain name.
In both cases, the renewal cost that went unpaid was US$35.00 per annum.
These problems highlight the importance of keeping your domain name contact information up-to-date to ensure that the notification of domain name renewal reaches an appropriate person and is dealt with in a timely manner.
At GoDomains, we are pleased to be able to aggregate many domains onto one account for organisations and individuals with large domain name portfolios. This results in less paperwork and easier management of your domains, but perhaps more importantly we can ensure the contact details for all your grouped domains are kept up to date so that important correspondance is not overlooked when contact details change or a contact person leaves the organisation.
